Tony W. Lee is co-founder and Partner of One Rock Capital Partners, LLC based in New York. Previously, he was a Managing Director of Ripplewood Holdings LLC, where he was responsible for investments in the global chemicals and general industrial sectors. During his 13 year tenure at Ripplewood he played a significant role in the investments in ICM Equipment Company, Asbury Automotive Group, Kraton Polymers and Supresta Holdings. Mr. Lee also served as the Director of Business Development for Asbury where he was instrumental in doubling the size of the company to over $4 billion in revenue through strategic acquisitions.
Prior to joining Ripplewood in 1997, Mr. Lee was a financial analyst in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at Salomon Brothers, Inc. in New York. While at Salomon, Mr. Lee completed eight transactions totaling over $20 billion, including the first 4-way merger in Europe.
Mr. Lee graduated with an A.B. degree in economics from Harvard College. Mr. Lee is married with 3 children and lives in New York City. He enjoys golf and is a patron of New York's Metropolitan Opera, where his wife serves as Chairman of the Young Associates Directors.
Sarah Chung is the founder and CEO of Periscope Solutions, a provider of advisory services for small businesses in the areas of strategy, marketing and operations. Incorporated in 2001, Periscope has worked with entrepreneurs and small-medium organizations to define areas for growth and provide strategic and execution support to further key initiatives such as business planning, fundraising, product development, marketing, sales and business development. The company has developed workshops for corporations, such as the Union Square Hospitality Group, and community organizations, such as Women's Venture Fund, Asian Women in Business and Queen's Economic Development Center. Ms. Chung also serves as a consultant to NYDesigns, a nonprofit organization providing support services to growing design firms.
Sarah holds a B.S. from Boston University College of Communications in Public Relations and a minor in East Asian Studies.
James R. Cho is an Assistant United States Attorney with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York. James previously worked in private practice with Seyfarth Shaw LLP, a national law firm, where he specialized in labor and employment law. James is active in numerous local and national bar associations and non-profit organizations.
Gina Chon is a Vice President of Trilantic Capital Partners (formerly known as Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking), a private equity fund with $4.5 billion under management. Prior to joining TCP, Gina worked in Lehman Brothers' Global Communications and Media investment banking practice in New York. She holds an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and a B.A., magna cum laude, in Economics from Cornell University.
Gina has been involved with KACF since 2005, and served as the Chair of the Steering Committee from 2007 to 2009.
Dr. Jeffrey Ahn is a distinguished Head and Neck surgeon and faculty member at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons. He is board certified in both Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, with a depth of academic and clinical experience in both fields. Dr. Ahn received his medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and & Surgeons and underwent residency training in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center. After the fellowship training in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, he became a full-time faculty member at Columbia University in 1996.
At Columbia, he has held the position of Residency Director in the department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for twelve years; his current university titles include Director of Sleep Disorder Surgery and Director of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has been a frequent speaker and course director at meetings of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has also lectured extensively abroad, most recently as the keynote speaker for the 8th International Conference in Asian Rhinoplasty in Korea and the 2nd Congress of Asian Society of Asian Cosmetic Surgery in China. From 2005-2006, Dr. Ahn was President of the Korean American Medical Association. Dr. Ahn is currently involved in the research and development of the robotic sinus/skull base surgery and NIH grant supported stem cell research for the production of cartilages used in head and neck reconstruction.
Eun S. Cho works in asset management as a Portfolio Manager with Victory Capital Management Inc. Mr. Cho focuses on small to mid cap companies in Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore and South East Asia. Prior to joining Victory, Mr. Cho worked as an analyst at Fiduciary Trust Company International where he specialized in Asia-Pacific small cap companies.
Mr. Cho studied at both Columbia University, where he received a B.S. degree in Operations Research, and Jacksonville University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics. Mr. Cho has been involved with KACF from 2004, and served as co-chair of the fundraising committee of the KACF’s Steering Committee from 2005-2009. Mr. Cho also sits on the Advisory Board of Beyond the Boroughs, an organization providing scholarships to students with a college acceptance letter but unmet financial need. In addition, Mr. Cho serves as a Executive Board member of the Columbia Engineering Young Alumni Association in charge of alumni relations.
Sang Cho, in his role as President& CEO, is directly responsible for all the business activities of Prestige, and its subsidiaries and affiliates. Mr. Cho was responsible for Prestige's entry into the hotel commercial laundry services market and he introduced its customer service and standards of service programs. Mr. Cho currently oversees all aspects of the company's expansion into several urban markets along the Eastern Seaboard of the US. He assumed his role as President& CEO in mid-2007. Under his leadership, Prestige's revenue has increased at a rate of over 40% annually.
Mr. Cho is a graduate of Drew University with a BA in Philosophy. Mr. Cho was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps infantry and served overseas in Kosovo, Norway, Japan and Iraq. He is also active in a variety community projects and organizations largely in support of the Arts and the Korean American community.
Dr. Mun Hong was born in Seoul, Korea in 1959 and immigrated with his family in 1974. He is the oldest of 5 children and currently lives in Manhattan with his wife, Laura, and 3 children, Alexander, Elizabeth, and Caroline.
He was in a BA-MD program at Johns Hopkins University and graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1986. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1989. Then, he did general cardiology fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital Center until 1991 and completed fellowship in interventional cardiology at Washington Hospital Center in 1993. Following the fellowship, he joined Cardiology Research Foundation and Washington Cardiology Center at Washington Hospital Center, where he was the Director of Experimental Physiology and Pharmacology and an interventional cardiologist. In 2000, he joined the cardiology division of Weill Cornell Medical College as the Associate Professor of Medicine and the Director of Cardiovascular Intervention and Research. In 2006, he moved to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, a university hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, as the Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Interventional Cardiology. Professionally Dr. Hong has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts on various topics of interventional cardiology. He is the Associate Editor of Journal of the Korean American Medical Association, on the editorial board of the American College of Cardiology, and a reviewer for multiple professional journals. He is currently the chairman of the scholarship committee for Korean American Medical Association. Dr. Hong is most proud of his association with Korean cardiology community, having mentored many Korean interventional cardiologists during their research years with him in Washington and at Cornell.
In 2009, Kevin became the first Korean-American to win a primary in NYC when he won the Democratic nomination for NYC Council in the 19th Council District. Prior to his run, Kevin served as the Deputy Director of Community Affairs for Congressman Gary L. Ackerman (D–NY). His previous professional experiences include working as a federal law clerk to Judge Denny Chin (SDNY), corporate real estate attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell, real estate investor/manager, and founding partner of Yoon Suh & Kim LLP.
His active community involvement includes serving as a current member of Community Board 5 in Manhattan. He also sits on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including the American Red Cross (Queens), and International Student Conference (Washington, D.C.). As a former participant in the Black-Korean Mediation Project, Kevin is a Certified Community Mediator.
In the past year, four non-profit organizations have honored Kevin for his historic primary win and years of community advocacy and public service. The Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY), presented Kevin with its "2009 Person of the Year." Townsend Harris High School, Kevin's alma mater, named him one of its top 25 distinguished alumni in its most recent 25-year history. In addition, the Organization of Chinese-Americans – LI named Kevin its "Distinguished Community Advocate" at its 2010 Annual Gala. Finally, City Hall News named Kevin as one of its political "Rising Stars: 40 Under 40" in 2009.
Kevin received his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University and his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a member of the Columbia Law Review. He is proficient in spoken Korean and conversant in Mandarin and Japanese.
Karen Na is currently a Branch Manager for JPMorgan Chase in its Downtown Flushing, Queens branch, where she advises personal clients and small business owners on a range of products and services offered by the bank. Ms. Na joined JPMorgan Chase in 1989, and has held various positions in its Retail Banking Group. Among the numerous awards received over the years, Ms. Na was recently presented with the Pinnacle Award for Sales Leadership along with the Best Performing Branch Award in the Suburban Region. Prior to joining JPMorgan Chase, Ms. Na was employed by the Dollar Dry Dock Savings Bank. Ms. Na served an 18-month term as a member of the Board of Managers at JPMorgan Chase, and currently serves as the Board of Managers for Flushing YMCA.
Ms. Na holds a B.A. in Economics from SUNY — Stony Brook, and enjoys spending time with her three boys. She is a founding board member of KACF.
Suok runs the Structured Products Analytics Group in FICC and his responsibilities include structuring and investment analysis, infrastructure building and portfolio management for a variety of structured products. Suok joined Goldman Sachs as an analyst in 1988 and became managing director in 1999.
Prior to joining the Structured Products Group, Suok worked in the Mortgage Finance Department, the Structured Finance Group and the Credit Derivatives Group in New York. Suok moved to Asia in 1998 as a founding member of the Asian Special Situations Group, investing in distressed asset backed receivables and corporate debt. During his stay in Asia, Suok was involved in many government auctions in Thailand and Korea, investing extensively Goldman Sachs Special Opportunities Fund. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Suok worked as a software engineer for Allied-Signal Aerospace, where he led the research and development of digital map display systems for military aircrafts.
Suok received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and M.S. in Computer Science from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1987. He now resides in New York with his wife and three daughters.
Chul-Joon Park is a partner at Bain & Company's New York office where he has a senior leadership role for the firm's private equity consulting practice. Chul-Joon first joined Bain & Company in 1991 as a founding member of its Seoul office. His industry expertise includes financial services, media, consumer goods and industrial products. He has led numerous strategic, operational and organizational transformation programs for the Korean chaebols, Asian corporations and Asian portfolio companies of leading private equity funds. From 2005 to 2009, he served as the firm's head of Private Equity consulting practice for Asia-Pacific region. He moved to New York in March 2010.
He is very active in serving pro-bono work especially in the educational sector and has worked with various Korean universities including Seoul National University, Korea University and Sungkyunkwan University in Korea. He is a director of Arumjigi Foundation (Culture Keeper's Foundation) in Korea, which is a non-profit organization that helps preserve various tangible and intangible Korean cultural heritage and assets as well as educates and advances their understanding. He also serves as an advisory board member for the Global MBA program at the Seoul National University.
Chul-Joon has a BA in French Literature from Seoul National University and an MBA from Cornell University. He currently resides in New York City with his wife and two boys.
Jung Lee Sanders is the founding Director of Art Projects International, a New York based gallery and art consulting service specializing in contemporary art, with a focus on works by leading contemporary artists from Asia. She has been active in the arts community for nearly twenty years, producing over sixty exhibitions and representing artists with diverse international backgrounds. Recognized as an expert in her field, she regularly provides art consulting services to museums, corporations and private collectors. In recent years, she has worked in concert with cultural institutions and organizations, including the San Jose Museum of Art, the Queens Museum of Art, the Vilcek Foundation and the Crow Collection of Asian Art. She is a member of ArtTable, a national organization for women leaders in the visual arts.
Jung Lee graduated from Epsom School of Art, England, and received her M.S. from Pratt Institute, New York. Thereafter, she completed her Ph.D coursework in Arts and Humanities at New York University. Born in Seoul, she was educated in Korea, Hong Kong, England and the United States. She lives in New York City with her husband and daughter.
James Seo joined Cushman & Wakefield in 1998. He currently oversees the UBS national portfolio of 400 offices as a direct report to John Cushman, Chairman of the Board. He works on all aspects of transaction management, including acquisitions, dispositions, renewals, and terminations. In addition to his national corporate work, he has brokered office/retail transactions in the New York City area. Other recent clients include Korea Investment Corporation, Hyundai America Shipping, Lightfoot Capital Partners, and Stockbridge Real Estate Fund. He is also an active member of the Cushman & Wakefield Global Korea Desk. Mr. Seo received a BA in Economics from Wesleyan University and holds a NY Real Estate Brokerage License. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors, he is member of the Community Grants Committee. He resides in Riverdale, NY with his wife and two children.
Jeffrey Seo is a Managing Director, head of Asian Equities, at Piper Jaffray & Co, a leading global investment firm serving the needs of corporations, private equity groups, public entities, nonprofit clients and institutional investors. Previously, he was the Head of Sales and Sales-Trading at Kim Eng Securities USA, a regional brokerage firm focused on the Asia-ex Japan markets and headquartered in Singapore.
Prior to Kim Eng Securities, Jeffrey was a Senior Consultant with Ernst & Young, advising Fortune 500 companies on a multitude of strategies, including cash flow management, tax related items and audit/assurance work.
Jeffrey has been an active member of KACF since its inception, a supporter of Beyond the Borough, and was previously a member of Ernst & Young's Ethnicity Advisory Council. He was born in Seoul, South Korea, received a B.S. from NYU's Stern School of Business and currently resides in Manhattan with his wife, Alisa, and daughter, Ava.
Dr. David Steel, executive vice president, is the head of strategic marketing for Samsung’s North American headquarters (NAHQ). In this role, he is responsible for corporate marketing and strategy, including integrated marketing management and market intelligence, as well as corporate social responsibility programs, environmental initiatives, sports and experiential marketing, partnerships and online marketing. With more than ten years within the Samsung organization, he has deep experience across several Samsung business units and possesses a breadth of expertise in many product categories. Dr. Steel has maintained strong relationships with retail channel and business partners around the world and is dedicated to managing new business opportunities and partnerships in North America.
Dr. Steel joined NAHQ in the summer of 2008 after ten years at Samsung Electronics in Korea. He began his time at Samsung in the Global Strategy Group, where he managed strategy and business development projects for numerous companies within the Samsung Group. From 2002 to 2007, he served as Vice President and head of marketing for the Digital Media business, where he established the role of marketing within the $25bn business. Working closely with his colleagues from around the world, he was able to strengthen the focus on key accounts, leading to sales growth of more than 300%, and develop leading capabilities in marketing communications and public relations. In 2007, he moved to the Mobile Communications Division, where he oversaw marketing strategy for the world’s number 2 maker of mobile phones.
Prior to joining Samsung, Dr. Steel worked at McKinsey & Co. and Argonne National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy.
Dr. Steel earned a PhD in Physics from MIT, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and a BA in Physics from Oxford University.
Sarah (BJ) Sung is formerly the Eastern Region Program Implementation Director for Community Programs within Citi's Global Consumer Group. She provided programs to national organizations in financial education, affordable housing, home ownership, small business development and capacity building. BJ is on the boards of the Korean American Community Foundation, Korean American Family Service Center, KOWIN and Asian Women Giving Circle.
Jun Chul Whang is a partner with the law firm of Jacob Medinger & Finnegan LLP, specializing in complex multi-jurisdictional products liability litigation. Mr. Whang is co-founder and co-owner of West Side Taekwondo, one of New York City's largest Taekwondo schools. He has coached numerous elite Taekwondo athetes, including members of the US National Team and US National Collegiate Team, and US National Champions. He participated in the 2004 Athens Olympics as Coach of the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Taekwondo Team. Mr. Whang is also co-author of “Taekwondo — The State of the Art” published in 1999 by Random House. Mr. Whang received his A.B. degree in Government from Dartmouth College in 1986, his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1989, and his Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Georgetown University Law Center (with distinction) in 1990. He is a founding board member of KACF.
Sung Chul Whang is Counsel at Olayan America Corporation, the investment advisory arm for North and South America for The Olayan Group, a private multinational enterprise comprising some 50 wholly owned, joint venture, and affiliated businesses that monitors a substantial investment portfolio of both public and private equities in a variety of sectors, including financial, communications, consumer and real estate. Until 2004, Mr. Whang was a partner in the corporate department at the law firm of Phillips Nizer LLP. Mr. Whang is the co-author of "Taekwondo - The State of the Art" published in 1999 by Random House. Mr. Whang is co-founder and co-owner of West Side Taekwondo, and has been on the coaching staff for the US National and US National Collegiate Teams. Mr. Whang received his A.B. degree in East Asian Studies from Dartmouth College in 1986, his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1989, and his Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from New York University School of Law in 1990. Mr. Whang is a founding director of KACF and was its inaugural president from 2002 through 2006.
James Wohn is a leading commercial bank officer in New York City possessing a proven track record in the Middle Market Banking arena. Jim joined Capital One Bank/North Fork Bank in 2005 as a Senior Vice President and NYC Team Leader. Prior to Capital One/North Fork, he held various positions at Bank of America (formerly Fleet National Bank), including Senior Vice President & Team Leader in New York City. He was with Fleet Bank/Bank of America for approximately 7 years. Prior to this, Jim was with The Bank of New York, where has was a Vice President covering the NYC market.
Jim is actively involved in the boroughs of NYC. He is a Sector Member of Henry Kravis' New York City Investment Fund (NYCIF), Director at Brooklyn & Queens Chambers of Commerce, the Greater Jamaica Development Corp., and LICBDC. Jim is Gala Chairman for a number of events, including the annual 50 Outstanding Asian Americans in Business Awards and KACF's inaugural gala. He graduated from Ripon College with a B.A. in History, served on its Board of Trustees and was presented with the College's Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
Dr. S. Steven Yang is an orthopedic surgeon. He is Associate Attending faculty of the Lenox Hill Hospital Department of Orthopedic Surgery and is Chief of the Division of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University School of Medicine and on staff at the Hospital for Joint Diseases and New York Hospital Queens. Dr. Yang is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
After graduating from Yale University in 1984, he studied at the Duke University School of Medicine. He has a Master's degree in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health. An internship in general surgery and a residency in orthopedic surgery were completed at the Lenox Hill Hospital. Fellowship training in surgery of the hand and upper extremity was undertaken at the Hospital for Special Surgery of the Weill Cornell University Medical College. He is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and in textbooks of orthopedic surgery. He resides in New York City with his wife and two children.
